Moving to a new state with your car
Insurance, registration and license steps, and why your rate may change.
When you move to another state, your car insurance, registration and driver's license all need updating. Each state sets its own deadlines and minimum coverage.
Steps
- Tell your insurer your new address before or as you move; you may need a new policy written for the new state.
- Check the new state's minimum coverage and whether it's a no-fault state.
- Get a new driver's license within the state's deadline (often 30 to 90 days).
- Register and title the car in the new state; some require an inspection or emissions test.
- Return or cancel old plates as the old state requires.
Why rates change
Premiums depend partly on where the car is kept: local claim costs, weather, theft rates and state rules all play a part.
