Peer-to-peer car sharing
Renting someone's car through an app, or sharing yours: coverage to understand.
Car-sharing apps let people rent cars directly from owners. Coverage usually comes from protection plans offered through the app, and personal policies and credit card benefits often don't apply.
If you're renting
- Compare the app's protection plans and their deductibles
- Check whether your personal policy or card covers peer-to-peer rentals; many don't
- Inspect and photograph the car as you would a rental
If you're sharing your car
- Tell your insurer; many personal policies exclude cars used for car sharing
- Read the app's host protection terms carefully
- Check what happens to your loan or lease terms
