Rideshare and delivery driving: coverage gaps
Why personal policies often exclude it, and what to ask about.
Personal auto policies often exclude driving for hire. Rideshare and delivery companies provide some coverage, but how much depends on whether you're logged in, matched with a trip or carrying a passenger.
The usual phases
- App off: your personal policy applies
- App on, waiting for a request: often a gap; company coverage may be limited
- Matched or carrying a passenger or delivery: company coverage is usually higher
Ask your insurer
- Does my policy exclude rideshare or delivery driving?
- Do you offer a rideshare or delivery endorsement?
- What happens if I don't tell you I drive for an app?
