Hi there,
This issue's question: does my US car insurance work in Mexico?
Usually not for liability, which is the coverage Mexico requires. Most drivers need a policy from an insurer licensed in Mexico before crossing. A few things to check:
- Buy Mexican liability insurance before you reach the border, and keep the documents in the car.
- Ask your US insurer whether it offers any limited coverage for your own car near the border.
- If you're renting, confirm the rental company allows the trip at all. Many don't.

Rental tip
Before you leave the rental lot, take a slow video walk-around of the car, including the roof and windshield. It takes two minutes and settles most damage disputes.
Destination note
Need an International Driving Permit? In the US only AAA and AATA can issue a valid one. Sites selling "international driver's licenses" aren't the real thing.
Safe travels,
