Driving to Mexico from the US

Why you need Mexican liability insurance, and what else to plan for.

5 min read

Driving into Mexico is different from driving into Canada. Most US auto policies don't provide the liability coverage Mexico requires, so you'll generally need a policy from an insurer licensed in Mexico.

Insurance

  • Buy Mexican auto liability insurance from a company licensed in Mexico before you cross
  • Some US insurers offer limited coverage for damage to your own car near the border; ask
  • Keep the policy documents in the car

Other planning

  • Check whether you need a temporary vehicle import permit for your destination (beyond the border zone and certain areas)
  • Carry your passport or passport card, driver's license and registration
  • Rental cars: confirm the company allows driving into Mexico; many don't

Rules change. Check official US State Department and Mexican government information before your trip. We don't sell or recommend insurance. Global Auto Coverage is not an insurer, broker or rental company and takes no referral fees.
