Renting a car abroad: coverage basics

What's included in the price, what isn't, and how your card fits in.

5 min read

Rental coverage works differently in many countries. In parts of Europe, for example, basic damage coverage is often included in the rental price but comes with a large excess (deductible).

Check before you book

  • What's included in the base price, and the size of the excess
  • Whether your US auto policy covers you there (often it doesn't)
  • Whether your credit card covers that country and vehicle
  • Required documents: IDP, passport, credit card in the driver's name

At the counter

  • Ask for the total including mandatory coverage and taxes
  • Understand the deposit hold on your card
  • Inspect and photograph the car as you would at home
