International Driving Permits for US drivers

What an IDP is, when you need one and where to get it legitimately.

3 min read

An International Driving Permit (IDP) translates your US driver's license into several languages. Some countries require one; others recommend it; rental companies may ask for it.

The essentials

  • An IDP is only valid together with your US driver's license
  • In the US, the State Department recognizes only two organizations to issue IDPs: AAA and the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA)
  • Apply before you travel; you generally can't get a US-issued IDP once abroad
