Driving to Canada from the US

Insurance proof, license and border basics for a road trip north.

4 min read

Many US personal auto policies cover driving in Canada, but confirm it before you go, and carry proof the border and police will recognize.

Before you go

  • Ask your insurer to confirm coverage in Canada and for proof of insurance accepted there (some insurers provide a special card)
  • Check that your liability limits meet the requirements of the provinces you'll drive in
  • Carry your valid US driver's license and vehicle registration
  • Bring a letter of permission if you're driving a car you don't own, and the rental agreement for rentals

Rentals

Check that the rental company allows cross-border travel and whether its coverage extends to Canada.

Border and documentation requirements change. Check official US and Canadian government travel information before your trip. Global Auto Coverage is not an insurer, broker or rental company and takes no referral fees.
