Guides / Renting a car
Does your own car insurance cover a rental?
How personal auto policies often extend to rentals in the US, and the common gaps.
In the US, many personal auto policies extend some of your coverage to a car you rent for personal use. But "some" is the key word, and it's worth a five-minute call before your trip.
Questions to ask your insurer
- Does my liability coverage apply when I rent a car?
- Do my collision and comprehensive coverages apply, and does my deductible apply?
- Are "loss of use", towing and administrative fees covered?
- Are there limits on vehicle type (trucks, luxury cars, vans) or rental length?
- Does coverage apply outside the US?
Common gaps
- If you don't carry collision on your own car, it usually won't appear for a rental either
- Business rentals may not be covered by a personal policy
- Many US policies don't cover driving outside the US and Canada
