Inspect a rental car (and avoid damage disputes)

The 5-minute walk-around and photos that protect you at return.

Damage disputes after a rental are common and frustrating. A careful inspection at pickup and return is the best protection.

At pickup

  1. Walk around the car and video it slowly, including the roof, wheels and windshield.
  2. Photograph every scratch and dent close up, with the rental agreement or a timestamp visible.
  3. Check the interior, fuel level and odometer.
  4. Ask an agent to note all existing damage on the agreement before you leave.

At return

  1. Video the car again in the return lane.
  2. Photograph the fuel gauge and odometer.
  3. Get a receipt showing no new damage, if staff are available.
