What to do if you crash a rental car

The extra steps when the car isn't yours.

Start with the usual steps after any crash: safety, 911 if anyone is hurt, information exchange and photos. Then a few rental-specific steps.

Rental-specific steps

  1. Call the rental company's number on the agreement or key tag right away.
  2. Get a police report; rental companies and card benefits often require one.
  3. Notify your auto insurer and, if relying on it, your card's benefits administrator, within their deadlines.
  4. Keep copies of the rental agreement, damage report and all receipts.
  5. Ask the rental company for an itemized repair bill and documentation of any "loss of use" charge.
